The ITF an d its European arm, the European Tran sport Workers’ Federation (ETF), is urging labour activists across Europe to support Dutch dockers in the port of Rotterdam who are in dispute with their employer.
The workers, represented by the ITF-affiliated FNV Bondgenoten, have been organ ising unan nounced work stoppages in the port since 30 Jan uary. They are involved in a contract dispute with APMTR, which operates the terminal at Maasvlakte 1.
The union is deman ding a wage increase of 1.5 per cent per year (three per cent over a two-year contract). Of the three per cent, they are suggesting that 0.5 per cent should pay for better pensions. APMTR is offering 2.5 per cent an d is refusing to invest in pensions payments.
FNV Bondgenoten also wan ts an extra employer contribution to ensure that workers retiring at 65 do not lose out under new pensions rules an d they would like to see the safety certificate initiative for ports “Safe work practices” put in place. Prompted by the building of a new terminal at Maasvlakte 2 the union is also deman ding job an d working conditions guaran tees for workers in both old an d new terminals. The compan y has so far refused on all fronts an d has been threatening to withdraw the existing contract if they fail to sign a new agreement imposed by man agement.
Since industrial action started, Maersk Line, a major customer at the terminal, has been diverting vessels to other European ports. The ITF an d the ETF are calling on affiliates that receive these vessels to han dle them “with caution” an d to take “whatever lawful action deemed necessary”.
MUNZ (Maritime Union of New Zealan d)

ITF unions campaign against "social dumping" in the North Sea
09/02/2012
ITF-affiliated trade unions in Denmark, Norway an d the UK – backed by partner unions from around the world – have launched a campaign against "social dumping" in the North Sea oil an d gas industry.
The campaign, launched in Aberdeen, Scotlan d, on 7 February with a wreath-laying ceremony at the seafarers' memorial, raises concern about the increasing number of flag of convenience an d so-called “national” registered vessels operating regularly in the North Sea. The unions say that this development dramatically reduces opportunities for traditional national seafarer jobs, "as compan ies employ an d exploit low-cost labour from countries such as Lithuan ia, Latvia, India, Roman ia an d the Philippines" – a practice known as "social dumping".
The unions are also "deeply concerned" that vessels registered in the Norwegian 1st registry are now being reflagged because of the unfair competition from other registers, an d are replacing Norwegian seafarers with others on wages an d working conditions far below Norwegian stan dards. They warn that this could result in no Norwegian seafarers being employed on offshore supply an d service vessels operating in Norway.
The unions are calling for "internationally acceptable wage an d working conditions for all seafarers on board vessels operating on the North Sea continental shelf, regardless of nationality."
Captain Han s San de of the Norwegian Officers' Union said: "All we ask for is fair competition in our own waters."
The campaign is also being supported by the National Union of Seafarers of India, as well as other ITF affiliates in Croatia, Fran ce, German y, Netherlan ds an d Russia.
