27 April 2012
More than 100 cargo han dlers in the Jordan ian port of Aqaba will receive a substan tial pay boost an d health benefits than ks to a new agreement that was brokered yesterday.
The union representing the workers, the ITF-affiliated General Union Of Port Workers, an d subcontractor Garan dal Man power Services, signed the collective bargaining agreement on 26 April. The parties forged the deal in the offices of the ITF Arab World in the presence of ITF regional secretary Bilal Malkawi.
The agreement gives 130 dockers working in the Aqaba container terminal an 18 per cent increase in their basic salary; they will also be covered by a health insuran ce scheme.
Both parties have demonstrated their commitment to the agreement, which supports the workers’ right to a fair deal.
Malkawi said: "This agreement is importan t because it covers a contractor that is delivering work for APMT in Aqaba. A few years ago it was impossible to organ ise the port workers themselves in Jordan . Now not only do they organ ise port workers but they also organ ise contractor workers. This demonstrates the power that the union now enjoys in Aqaba."
