The ITF is calling for solidarity with the Union des Syndicats UMT des Tran sports, following the recent dismissals of union activists.
The ITF-affiliated dockers’ union is in dispute with APM Terminals Tan gier. The union established the right to collectively bargain with the compan y in November. Since then, a member of the union board an d three other activists have been sacked.
The dismissals are apparently connected to the union’s new-won rights. Man agement at the APM Terminal's Tan giers operations appear to be acting aggressively against the union.
“It is disappointing that the man agement of APM terminals is acting in this way,” said Fran k Leys, dockers’ section secretary. “We hope that the local man agement will resolve the issue an d get back on track to bargain fairly with the union.”
"We are not clear why APM treats its workers differently in some parts of the world,” said Bilal Malkawi, ITF Arab World regional secretary. “All dock workers in the region are monitoring what is happening in Tan giers, an d will act accordingly. We hope that the man agement will reinstate the sacked workers immediately, an d then sit round the table for negotiations."
The ITF has already written to the APM Terminals Tan gier Man aging Director, Etienne Rocher, strongly urging continued dialogue an d the reinstatement of the sacked union activists without further delay. The compan y has yet to respond.
The ITF is asking its affiliates to support UMT, by sending letters of support.
