ITF president Paddy Crumlin promised to step up efforts to stan d up for workers’ rights last week when he addressed the International Brotherhood of Teamsters’ international convention in the US.
Speaking at the event in Las Vegas on 28 June, he said: “We come here committed to forging an even stronger allian ce an d friendship in fighting with you across the globe to stop the war against workers.”
He continued: “We are here because of the lies said about our unions an d our labour movement an d because we wan t the truth to resonate across our workplaces an d be heard in all of our communities an d nations.”
That truth was, he said, “that honest labour must be properly acknowledged, respected an d rewarded – regardless of how difficult that fight may be.”
Crumlin also spoke about Iran ian unionist Man sour Osan loo, who was released earlier this month after almost four years in jail. He stated: “It is the truth that freed Man sour Osan loo, the Iran ian bus driver imprisoned, bashed an d humiliated for man y years in his own country for seeking wage justice for his members.”
The convention resolved to award Osan loo honorary membership of the Teamsters. “Man sour Osan loo is an example of courage an d strength,” said general president Jim Hoffa. “But the struggle continues. The union is still not allowed to function there an d other union leaders are still jailed.”
