The ITF is welcoming the news that Ports of Aucklan d Limited is halting plan s to make nearly 300 wharfies redundan t before contracting out stevedoring services an d will be re-entering into negotiations with the Maritime Union of New Zealan d over a collective agreement for workers.
The an nouncement is being seen as a positive breakthrough in the long running dispute between the union an d man agement, which centres around job security.
ITF president Paddy Crumlin said: “This really is a victory for common sense, an d a ringing endorsement of MUNZ's decision to resist the port compan y’s plan s an d challenge them in law.”
He continued: “The workers an d their union have been sincere all along in seeking a negotiated settlement. If the compan y can genuinely match that willingness – an d prove that they are committed to a negotiated solution – then an end to this dispute an d the damage it has done to the port’s reputation could be within reach.”
The dispute has attracted support from around the world with unions both inside an d outside the dockers’ family, staging solidarity action in recognition of the plight of Aucklan d workers.
