The port
of the Polish city of Gdansk is the birthplace of Solidarity.
The union that
is -- the one properly known as "NSZZ Solidarnosc".
That was more
than three decades ago, and today in a very changed world, we are once again
being asked by port workers in Gdansk to show our solidarity.
Maciek Konopka
has been sacked from his job at Deepwater Container Terminal (DCT) in Gdansk
because he's a committed and active trade union leader.
It's the latest
in a line of union-busting actions by management including intimidation,
threats of dismissal, and nine other workers being forced to leave.
The employer is
refusing to bargain collectively and address a wide range of issues including
temporary contracts, pay, holiday work and more.
NSZZ
Solidarnosc and the International Transport Workers Federation have launched a
global campaign in solidarity with the port workers of Gdansk.
