DOCKERS GATHER IN GOTHENBURG TO RENEW LASHING CAMPAIGN

More than 50 dockers from several Swedish ports met today in Gothenburg, Sweden, for a workshop about lashing, where concrete plans for rolling out the lashing campaign in Sweden were made.

Lashing – the fastening of cargo to a ship – is a key part of dockers’ work. Only dockers have the skills to do this dangerous task safely, but many shipowners push seafarers to lash cargo in order to save time and money. This puts seafarers at risk of accidents and eats into their shore leave, while taking away work from qualified dockers already under pressure from port automation.

Peter Lövkvist, Head of the international department of Swedish Transport Workers' Union, delcared "we are proud to host the ETF and the ITF here in Gothenburg today. As technological developments erode the number of jobs in ports, we are determined to get back any single job in our ports, inlcuding lashing."

Today’s workshop is part of our long-running campaign with the ITF to defend the principle that lashing is dockers’ work. The campaign recently achieved a major victory, with a global agreement between maritime employers and unions that lashing work should only be done by dockers unless otherwise agreed. However, we now need to make sure that this dockers’ clause is implemented. Dockers must be informed and ready to mobilise because their role will be crucial.

Our workshops are part of that process, and this is the first in a new series of meetings to follow up on the recent agreement. The Swedish participants were joined by international guests including the ITF and ETF Secretariats, ITF inspectors, a delegation of Norwegian dockers, and members of the ETF Dockers Steering Committee.

Chair of the ETF Dockers Section, Terje Samuelsen, said that “lashing is a real priority for the ETF. We need to build on our recent success in global negotiations and get the dockers’ clause implemented all over Europe. Solidarity has always been key to our success: solidarity between dockers in different countries and solidarity between dockers and seafarers. Workers standing together can fight against social dumping and exploitation: that’s the message of our campaign for Fair Transport in Europe.”

Mikael Gustafsson, who is very active in the ETF young dockers’ group and a youth representative in the Swedish Transport Workers’ Union, stressed how important the lashing campaign is for younf workers: “Lashing is crucial for the future of dockwork, and we young dockers are fully engaged in the struggle and determined to get it back.”

Polish dockers protest in bid for ‘life with dignity’

Dock workers in Poland staged a protest last Tuesday (21 July) in their ongoing struggle for freedom of association and collective bargaining rights at the Port of Gdansk.

An ITF dockers’ team, including second vice chair of the section Torben Seebold, was on the ground in support of the 100 members of affiliated union Solidarnosc, who demonstrated outside the offices of employer DCT.

The rally was part of build up to strike action that may take place if management continues to ignore calls from workers for a collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Seebold said: “The company is trying to make this dispute purely about money but that’s just not the case. What workers here want is a CBA that will put them in a position to negotiate on issues like permanent contracts, pay and working conditions.

“The chairman of the Polish national trade union Piotr Duda, who was on the picket line, got it exactly right when he said that workers are not asking for anything extraordinary. They want to live with dignity and have the opportunity to be fairly represented by the union of their choice on the issues that impact their day to day lives.”

He went on: “We will be standing by the workers here who are facing sustained opposition from DCT. We believe a number of union leaders have even been fired for their activities.”

In addition to support on the ground the ITF is also seeking conversations regarding the dispute with key stakeholders. These include Australian fund management firm Macquarie and clients in its infrastructure fund which owns DCT Gdansk and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development which has made significant investment to fund port expansion plans.

Польские докеры выступили за достойную жизнь

Польские докеры организовали акцию протеста во вторник, 21 июля, продолжая борьбу за свободу ассоциаций и право на коллективные переговоры для работников порта Гданьск.

Представители докеров МФТ, в том числе второй заместитель председателя секции докеров Торбен Сиболд, пришли поддержать протест ста польских докеров из профсоюза Солидарность, которые провели митинг протеста у офисов работодателя, компании DCT.

Митинг протеста стал частью подготовки к забастовке, которая возможна в том случае, если руководство продолжит игнорировать призывы работников компании провести переговоры и заключить коллективный договор.

Сиболд сказал следующее: «Компания пытается свести данный трудовой спор исключительно к деньгам, но это совсем не так. Работники хотят добиться заключения коллективного договора, который даст им возможность вести переговоры по таким проблемным вопросам, как постоянные контракты, оплата и условия труда».

«Председатель польского национального профсоюза Петр Дуда, который был вместе с пикетчиками, совершенно правильно сказал, что работники не просят у руководства компании ничего сверхъестественного. Они добиваются достойной жизни и возможности быть представленными своим профсоюзом, по своему выбору, чтобы донести до работодателей проблемные вопросы, возникающие ежедневно».

И далее: «Мы будем стоять плечом к плечу с работниками компании, которым пришлось столкнуться с упорным сопротивлением руководства компании DCT. Мы полагаем, что несколько профсоюзных лидеров даже пострадали и были уволены за свою работу».

Кроме того, для оказания поддержки на местах МФТ пытается наладить диалог о трудовом споре с основными заинтересованными сторонами. В том числе, это австралийская фирма по управлению фондами Macquarie и клиенты, пользующиеся инфраструктурой фонда, который владеет компанией DCT-Гданьск, Европейский банк реконструкции и развития, который внес значительный капитал в счет планов расширения портовых сооружений.
