Port of Tallinn in January-September continued to be a leader in Baltics

Cargo handling results at the port of Klaipėda continue to grow – gradually exceeding last year‘s results and expecting to reach annual handling record. During the nine months of the year 2010 the Klaipėda port already handled 22,5 million tons of marine cargo, total growth of handling figures was 11,8% in comparison to the corresponding period of last year. According to the cargo turnover at the Baltic ports, the Klaipėda port continues to outpace the neighbouring ports of Riga and Ventspils, and is only second to the Joint Port of Tallinn.
The largest growth of handling figures during the nine months of this year, in comparison to the corresponding period of 2009, was reached due to increased handling figures of natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 575,3 thous.tons), ro-ro cargo (+853,0 thous.tons), containerized cargo (+588,2 thous.tons), minerals and building materials (+342,7 thous.tons), reported BC Klaipeda Seaport marketing Department.

According to the cargo types, the largest growth (29,6 %) was recorded in handling of general cargo – 7 109,4 thous.tons (31,5 % of total turnover of the port) handled. Turnover of dry and bulk cargo increased by 27,8 %, cargo volumes of this cargo type reached 8 554,0 thous.tons (37,9 %). Handling figures of liquid cargo decreased by –13,8 %, in total 6 850,4 thous.tons (30,6 %) were handled.

During the January-September of 2010, 4 785 ships called at the port of Klaipėda, i.e. by –10,4 % or by –555 ships less than during the same period of the last year. During the analyzed period, 264,7 thous. passengers visited the port, i.e. by 16,7 % more that during the corresponding period of 2009.

The port of Klaipėda remains the leader according to handling figures of containerized cargo. During January-September of this year, 213513 TEU of cargo was handled, i.e. by 17,6% more than during the corresponding period of the last year (growth – 31897 TEU).

Klaipėda port closed the cruise shipping season. During the analyzed period, the Klaipėda port was visited by 35,2 thous. cruise passengers, i.e. by 5,0 % more than during the corresponding period of 2009.
