With the sea born totalling to 21,5 million tons Klaipėda Port’s cargo handling growth rate throughout seven month of the year 2011 was even 23,0% up comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year. According to cargo handling turnover in Easter Coast Baltic Ports in the period of January – July of 2011 Klaipeda Port has still remained ahead the neighbouring Ports of Riga and Ventspils but slightly left behind the Joint Port of Tallinn.

The common cargo handling results of Klaipeda Port and Būtingė Terminal made 26,5 million tons in January – July of  2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn by 4,4 million tons, informed BC press service of Klaipeda Port.

The highest increase in cargo turnover during seven month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 437,9 thousand tons), liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+639,0 thousand tons), containerized cargo (+604,9 thousand tons), oil products (+480,7 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+418,9 thousand tons) and bulk iron ore (+317,8 thousand tons).

In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo were the handling turnover made 8 317,2 thousand tons (38,8% of all cargoes handled in the Port) increased mostly(by 26,2%). The handling turnover of general cargo advanced by 21,6% to 6 588,7 thousand tons (30,7%). Liquefied cargo handling volumes increased by 20,4%, the handling volumes of this cargo group were 6 553,4 thousand tons ( 30,5%).

3 939 vessels, i.e. more by 8,7% or by 316 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year called Klaipėda Port in January–July of this year. The number of passengers calling the Port throughout the analysed period was 186,9 thousand, i.e. more by 0,9% comparing with the corresponding period of 2010. The number of cruise passengers in January – July of 2011 was 13,1 thousand, i.e. less by – 45,2% or by – 10,8 thousand passengers.

Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 241 731 TEU, i.e. more by 47,0% comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 (the increase made77 256TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – July of 2011.

Докеры контейнерного терминала Eurogate порта Танжер начали 24-часовую забастовку за достойные условия труда и повышение зарплаты. На крайние меры профсоюз вынудило пойти нежелание администрации вести конструктивный диалог, сообщает пресс-служба Российского профессионального союза моряков.

«Членская организация ITF – профсоюз ETWU – несколько месяцев добивалась организации полноценного социального диалога с работодателем, чтобы призвать его к ответственности за смехотворный уровень оплаты труда своих сотрудников, нарушение норм безопасности, а также к прекращению гонений на активистов независимого объединения», - указывается в сообщении.

Однако администрация отказывается идти навстречу работникам. Противостояние вылилось в стачку, и, по словам представителей ETWU, не исключено, что забастовки будут продолжены.

За январь-июль 2011 года общий объем грузооборота портов восточного побережья Балтийского моря составил 189 064,9 тыс. тонн, рост 8,2% или на 14 302,7 тыс. тонн. В терминале Бутинге в Клайпеде за отчетный период перевалено 5 024,1 тыс. тонн нефтепродуктов (результаты перевалки в терминале Бутинге далее в отчете не анализируются), сообщили БК в порту Клайпеды.

Dockers in the Eurogate Tangier Mediterranean port in Morocco have staged a 24-hour strike over working conditions and rates of pay.

Workers represented by the ITF-affiliated Eurogate Terminal Workers' Union (ETWU), downed tools on Friday 12 August over "a lack of response from the company’s management" regarding their demands for an increase in wages and improved health and safety standards. The union also claims that workers have been subject to anti-union activities at the port.

ETWU representatives say they are ready and willing to negotiate with management to achieve mutually agreeable results. They have also made it clear they are prepared to stage further walkouts if there is no movement from management.

The eurogate terminal is a close neighbour of the AP Moller Maersk (APMT) terminal also based in Tangier. APM is one of the four largest global network terminal operators (GNTs) in the world. Between them the "big four" operate over 50 percent of ports globally. The ITF dockers’ section has identified raising health and safety standards and improving working conditions at these industry-leading GNTs amongst their top priorities and as a result is running a dedicated GNT campaign.

Bilal Malkawi, ITF Arab World secretary, said: “Until last year we struggled to have any worker representatives in ports in Tangier, where GNTs are running the terminals. Now we not only have representation, we have strong unions, an agreement in theAPMT, and now EUROGATE is following. Workers in terminals managed by GNTs inthe region are achieving successes everywhere, from the west in Morocco to the east in Egypt. We will all keep working as one team to support our affiliates in the region to make sure that substandard terminals are eradicated.”

The ITF has called for an investigation after a Ghanaian fisher died in a fishing port in the north east of Northern Ireland.

It has been reported that Adzooloo Fortune Atsu who was working in the fishing industry in Kilkeel, County Down, died on 18 July after he became ill on his fishing boat. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he later died. The cause of death was listed as meningitis.

Following a request from Atsu’s family, the ITF has asked the chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to investigate the circumstances surrounding Atsu’s death and his employment in Kilkeel.

ITF inspector Ken Fleming commented: “There are strict controls imposed by the UK Border Agency where non-European fishers are coming to work on fishing vessels in the UK. The documents related to this fishers’ employment supplied by the family to the ITF would need close examination to see if they comply with regulations for non-Europeans working in UK waters.”

“There is prima facie evidence that some employers in Kilkeel are once more recruiting employees in non-EU countries in contravention of border control regulations as well as health and safety regulations.”

Fleming also expressed concern that “a new trafficking route in Ireland and Britain may now be in operation.”

The PSNI stated that the matter would be forwarded to another department – a step that is likely to further delay any investigation.

Transport workers in a container terminal in Tuticorin, India, have won a substantial wage hike following a four-day strike and assistance via the ITF’s global network terminals (GNT) network.

The Tuticorin PSA SICAL Container Terminal Staff Union reached a four-year wage settlement after members walked out on strike for four days from 19-22 July. On 22 July, managers of the PSA container terminal finally accepted the union’s demands; they agreed to a 43 per cent wage increase backdated to 1 April 2011, interim relief of 2500 rupees (US$54) from 1 July as well as statutory and performance bonuses for all employees. In addition, 23 employees on low grades are set to receive an increment.

Another PSA union and member of the ITF GNT network, a solidarity initiative linking unions in container terminals around the world, provided vital assistance by encouraging local management to enter into negotiations with the union.

ITF dockers’ section secretary Frank Leys commented: “We congratulate the union on this success. The combined effect of the union’s strike action and lobbying by another PSA union helped to win this agreement. It’s a great example of how members of the GNT network can help each other out.”

Crane operators at the port of Luka Koper in Slovenia have ended their weeklong strike after signing an agreement with management laying out a range of new terms and conditions.

Members of the Sindikat Zerjavistov Pomorskih Dejavnosti (SZPD), a union affiliated to both the ITF and the European arm of the ITF the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), downed tools at the majority-state-owned port on Friday 29 July after negotiations over health and safety and job security broke down.

Workers claim that a significant growth in tonnage over the past 18 months has impacted on the length of working hours and health and safety standards at the adriatic port. There have also been reports that some subcontracted workers were being paid as little as 12€ (US$17) for 11-hour shifts.

Now, following the courageous efforts of workers on the ground, an agreement has been signed between the union and port management stipulating a number of new rules. These include more breaks for crane operators and an overhaul of health and safety regulations on site.

With regards to the subcontractors, working time regulations have been put in place.

It has also been agreed that a collective bargaining agreement, covering issues like wages and working conditions, will be signed within the next two months.

SZPD executive board member Mladen Jovicic said: “This is a great victory for SZPD and for workers employed by subcontractors. New possibilities are in front of us to regulate our jobs so that terms are fair for every docker.”

Jovicic also thanked workers in the Italian port of Trieste and the port of Rijeka in Croatia for their solidarity action during the strike. He expressed gratitude to the ITF and ETF for their support and assistance.

Профсоюзы транспортников Японии и Норвегии солидарны с железнодорожниками Таиланда, которым приходится отстаивать свои права под натиском анти-профсоюзного давления работодателей, которых поддержал тайский суд по трудовым спорам.

Уволены семеро членов профсоюза железнодорожников Таиланда (SRUT), членской организации МФТ, а также им предъявлен иск о нанесении ущерба после того, как Центральный суд по трудовым спорам принял такое решение. Профсоюз намерен подать кассационную жалобу. Суд поддержал точку зрения руководства о том, что железнодорожные устройства и механизмы бдительности являются лишь дополнительными, но не основными. Трудовой конфликт начался по причине отказа железнодорожников в октябре 2009 года работать в опасных условиях на поездах после трех серьезных несчастных случаев.

В Норвегии 11 августа транспортные профсоюзы организовали акцию протеста у здания тайского посольства в Осло в поддержку профсоюза SRUT. Они также вручили официальное письмо протеста, которое посол пообещал передать правительству Таиланда.

В обращении к коллегам в Таиланде Ойстен Аслаксен, председатель железнодорожной секции МФТ, член норвежского профсоюза Norsk Lokomotivmannsforbund, сказал, что он “ошеломлен” решением суда, поскольку в Норвегии водителя могут уволить, если он выехал из депо с неисправным устройством бдительности.

Он продолжает: «Я всячески одобряю и поддерживаю вас, а также восхищаюсь вами, поскольку вы отважились принять на себя ответственность за поддержание стандартов безопасности, что, очевидно, отказывается сделать руководство».

За два дня до этого делегация японских членских организаций МФТ во главе с Юджи Ииджима, включая и представителя МФТ из токийского офиса, встретилась с официальными лицами – сотрудниками тайского посольства в Токио. Делегация вручила послу письмо, в котором излагаются проблемные моменты в связи со сложившейся ситуацией. В письме говорится следующее: «Если все-таки активисты не будут восстановлены, и будут продолжаться репрессивные меры, то пострадают не только общие стандарты безопасности и охраны труда в государственной железнодорожной компании Таиланда, но будет нанесен непоправимый ущерб правам трудящихся в вашей стране, а также пострадает международная репутация Таиланда».

Профсоюзные активисты объединяют усилия и протестуют по всему миру, от Индии до США, и все профсоюзы поддерживают тайских братьев и сестер из профсоюза железнодорожников SRUT.

Труд моряков должен быть оценен по заслугам, как и труд работников любой другой профессии, независимо от страны регистрации их судна. Такое заявление прозвучало недавно на мероприятии МФТ, недавно организованном для  моряков и их семей на Филиппинах.

Выступая на первом международном съезде семей моряков, который проходил в Маниле 4 и 5 августа, заместитель генерального секретаря МФТ Стюарт Ховард поблагодарил моряков и их близких за значительный вклад в развитие морского судоходства, а также подчеркнул, насколько важна роль моряков торгового флота в перевозке и доставке грузов по всему миру. Он также зачитал обращение президента МФТ Пэдди Крамлина, в котором говорится, что статус моряка должен быть таким же, как и других профессий, независимо от того флага, под которым ходит их судно. Ведущая роль моряков, которые обеспечивают потребности  мировой экономики, также заслуживает признания. Именно благодаря их вкладу в экономику и торговлю морякам удается добиться должного внимания к своим требованиям. Важно добиться от правительств разных стран подписания международной Конвенции о труде в морском судоходстве (сводной конвенции МОТ, MLC – 2006 г.), Билля о правах моряков, а также 185 Конвенции МОТ об удостоверениях личности моряков.

На съезде также присутствовали Розалинда Бальдос, секретарь департамента труда и занятости населения. Она выступила с речью от лица президента Акино.  Она заверила МФТ в том, что правительство Филиппин уже готово подписать 185 Конвенцию МОТ, а также уже приступило к трехсторонним переговорам по ратификации сводной конвенции MLC – 2006 г., которая, как она выразилась, «столь близка ее сердцу», и которая, как она надеется, будет подписана и ратифицирована ее правительством к концу года.

Съезд был организован Марисой Ока, дочерью ныне покойного капитана Грега Оки, который был членом профсоюза моряков Филиппин, членской организации МФТ. В организации съезда принял участие фонд «Gig Foundation», который занимается развитием и укреплением отношений с семьями моряков и между ними. В мероприятии приняло участие 1350 делегатов, и Фонд моряков МФТ также поддержал это мероприятие через Международный комитет по социально-бытовому обслуживанию моряков.

Профсоюзы в разных странах мира продемонстрировали свою поддержку автомобилестроителям США, рабочим завода запчастей БМВ, которым грозят увольнения в конце этого месяца.

Инспектора МФТ и докеры из разных стран мира поддерживают группу из 70 рабочих завода по производству запчастей БМВ в г. Онтарио, Калифорния. Интересы рабочих представляет профсоюз Teamsters, членская организация МФТ, поскольку рабочим грозят увольнения, а их работа будет передана внешнему подрядчику.

Акции солидарности в поддержку рабочих в Онтарио проходят по всему миру, в частности, информационные пикеты 9 и 10 августа в крупнейших портах, где происходит отправка запчастей БМВ по всему свету – протесты в Австралии, Бельгии, Германии, Мексике, Нидерландах, ЮАР и Таиланде. Активисты профсоюзов МФТ также проводят протесты на заводах БМВ, в салонах и у офисов компании.

Секретарь секции докеров МФТ Фрэнк Лейс говорит: «Докеры в крупнейших портах мира, через которые проходит продукция БМВ, очень быстро среагировали на просьбу проявить солидарность и продемонстрировать руководству компании, что для нас очень важны вопросы социальной защищенности наших коллег, в какой бы стране мира они не работали. Мы полагаем, что руководство компании БМВ пересмотрит свое решение и не будет заменять своих преданных работников с большим стажем, работающих на заводе в Онтарио».

Встреча представителей профсоюза Teamsters с руководством компании была назначена на 10 августа.

The work of seafarers must be given the same recognition as any other category of worker regardless of where their vessels are registered. That was a key message delivered by the ITF at an event for seafarers and their families recently.

Speaking at the first international seafarers’ families’ convention in Manila on 4 and 5 August, ITF assistant general secretary Stuart Howard thanked seafarers and their families for the contribution made to seafaring and highlighted the important role seafarers played in moving cargo around the world.

He also delivered a message from ITF president Paddy Crumlin, which said that the status of seafarers had to be considered to be equal to that of other workers, regardless of the flag of the ship on which they worked. Their frontline role in servicing the global community also needed to be acknowledged. If these things did not happen, it would be unlikely that their demands would be given a fair hearing. It was important for governments to sign up to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), the Seafarers Bill of Rights and International Labour Organization convention 185 on seafarers’ identity documents.

Also present at the event was Rosalinda Baldoz, secretary of the department of labour and employment, who delivered a speech on behalf of President Aquino. She wished to assure the ITF that the Philippines government was in the process of signing convention 185 and had also started the process of tripartite discussion on MLC 2006, which she said was “close to her heart” and which she hoped would be signed by the end of the year.

The convention was organised by Marissa Oca, daughter of the late Captain Gregorio Oca of the ITF-affiliated Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines and the Gig Foundation, an organisation promoting relationships among and within seafarer families. The event welcomed 1350 delegates and was supported by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust through the International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare.

ITF inspectors and dockers’ unions are showing their support for American BMW workers by holding events at BMW car-importing ports, showrooms and offices around the world today and tomorrow. The actions are to back some 70 workers at the company’s Ontario, California parts distribution plant, who are due to be sacked at the end of this month and their jobs outsourced.

Lawful ITF solidarity actions such as ‘information pickets’ (explaining the reasons for the dispute to the public and potential BMW buyers) are taking place at the major BMW vehicle-shipper ports of Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Durban, Laem Chabang, Melbourne, Rotterdam, Veracruz and Zeebrugge. ITF trade unionists will also be at BMW plants, dealerships and offices, supporting their colleagues from the Teamsters union, which represents the threatened Ontario workers.

ITF dockers’ section secretary Frank Leys commented: “Dockers at the biggest ports through which BMW cars are transshipped have reacted speedily to a request to show the company that we take the welfare of our colleagues seriously, wherever they are in the world. We trust BMW will now revisit its decision to replace the faithful and long serving staff at the Ontario plant.”

New programme targets 'most dangerous' fishing sector

The ITF and IUF (International Union of Food Workers) have launched From Catcher to Counter, a programme to build worker representation and improve conditions in the fishing industry.

The new initiative is designed to cover the whole industry from ‘catcher to counter’ – with the following aims:

• Increase union membership

• Increase union power

• Standardising conditions across multinational companies

• Work to improve terms and conditions

• Guarantee conditions of workforce

• Put workers at the centre of the campaign

• Establish process to assure that fishing is not illegal, unregulated and unreported

Ron Oswald, IUF general secretary, explained: “The fishing industry is vast, vital, but often unregulated. Fishing is one of the world’s most dangerous occupations, something that has been vividly underlined by the recent release of casualty figures from the IMO (International Maritime Organization), which estimates the annual death toll among fishers as a chilling 24,000 per year.”

Liz Blackshaw, ITF/IUF fisheries programme leader, added: “The starting point for this important new joint effort is to gauge the depth of union coverage across this whole industry. That information is essential for us to develop an organising plan for the industry, and we’re asking ITF and IUF-affiliated unions to help us find it. She continued: “The need for representation and protection for fishers is being shown right now in New Zealand, where ITF unions have pushed the government into declaring a ministerial inquiry into the often scandalous conditions in which many foreign fishers have been made to work.”
