At ver.di works council conference in Hanover - Shaping the transformation – strengthening co-determination, the ETF General Secretary, Livia Spera presented European Transport Workers' Federation’s perspective on the future of the port and maritime industry & talked about the European Transport Workers' Federation work coordinating unions to anticipate and engage with the continuous changes in the shipping industry.

Livia Spera: future challenges, such as automation, should be embraced as key opportunities, but with the dockers at the core.

There is no automation without negotiation!

Automation in ports obliges the industry and policy to adapt.

The shift to the new technologies must focus on:

• safeguarding jobs
• dedicated and long-term funding for retraining
• finding new forms of taxation:

automated facilities should be considered for social contributions.
