Rail Baltica is today one of the five most important transport projects in Europe, European Commission deputy president and Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said on Tuesday in Tallinn, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Kallas said that while Rail Baltica was just a dream three years ago, now the situation has changed. "Today it is one of the five most important transport projects in Europe for the future financing perspective. It is very important. The situation is such now that it is very hard to take that project off the agenda," he said.

"It is the matter of cooperation of 4-5 states how that project will progress into legal and technical documents, that monstrous work lies still ahead," he said.

Kallas said that the European Commission wants a financing application in 2014 and that is a lot of work.

"I certainly believe that by 2014 it will be possible to submit such an application and it is certainly important that the application would be a common one, from the three Baltic states and Poland," said Estonian economy ministry adviser Miiko Peris.
