Väinamere Liinid sees number of ferry users’ increase by 8% in July

Väinamere Liinid, which operates ferry traffic on the Estonian mainland-Saaremaa island, mainland-Hiiumaa island and Saaremaa-Hiiumaa island routes, saw passenger numbers grow 8% in July , after having increased by 10% in June, Public Broadcasting reports, reported LETA.

Altogether the company serviced over 355,000 passengers and nearly 130,000 vehicles on the three routes in July, meaning the year-on-year growth of passengers by 4% and that of vehicles 8%.

On the mainland-Saaremaa route, the number of passengers grew by 4% and number of vehicles by 9%. In the mainland-Hiiumaa route, the number of passengers grew by 4% and the number of vehicles 7%. On the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa route, passenger number grew 7% while the number of vehicles grew by 6%.

Väinamere Liinid manager Urmas Treiel said that the new ships that the company started using in 2010 and 2011 have brought a new quality to passenger shipping traffic.



Cargo turnover of Transiidikeskus grows 10% in seven months

The container terminal of Transiidikeskuse AS handled 148,583 TEU of container goods in the first seven months of this year, which is by a tenth more than at the same time in 2012, Äripäev Online reports/LETA.

"We have increased our container turnover this year in the planned volume and it can be seen that the expected growth will continue in the autumn too," board chairman of Transiidikeskus, Erik Laidvee said, adding that they expect positive developments for the transit sector in the autumn connected to concluding the Estonia-Russian border agreements.

The total cargo turnover of Transiidikeskuse AS was 1,542,836 tonnes in seven months.



Throughput of Baltic Coal Terminal (Latvia) down 5.1% to 2.84 mln t in Jan-July’13

In January-July 2013, Baltic Coal Terminal (Ventspils, Latvia) handled 2,842,689 tonnes of coal (-5.1%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the stevedore. In July, the company’s throughput climbed by 43% to 487,911 tonnes.

Baltic Coal Terminal is a joint venture of JSC „Ventspils Commercial Port” and LLC „Indtec Baltic Coal” which represent the interests of OJSC «Zarechnaya Mine», supplying coal from Russia. In 2012 the terminal handled 4.799 mln tonnes of cargo. Currently, the coal handled at the BCT’s terminal is exported largely to the ports of UK, Germany, Poland etc. 

The terminal’s indoor warehouse allows simultaneous storage of 210,000 tonnes of coal, (capacity - 6 m t/y).

The two companies have invested in the first phase of the terminal EUR 80 million.



Coal Company Zarechnaya intends to raise its share in Baltic Coal Terminal to 100%

Coal Company Zarechnaya LLC intends to raise its share in Baltic Coal Terminal (Ventspils, Latvia) to 100%, the company says.  The agreement was signed as early as on February 15, 2013 but has not been executed yet. Currently the mine holds 50% of the terminal’s shares.

Coal Company Zarechnaya is one of the most reliable and successfully developing coal mining holdings in Kuzbass region. It is one of Russia’s five largest exporters of thermal coal. Coal Corporation Zarechnaya manages the coal mining and subsidiary enterprises. Zarechnaya includes 6 coal mining (3 under construction and 3 operating), washing plant and a number of subsidiary enterprises. Coal Company Zarechnaya exports more than 90% of the end product. The consumers are: chemical-recovery, energy and other enterprises in more than 12 countries including Spain, The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, etc.

Throughput of Klaipeda Port and Būtingės terminal (Lithuania) up 4.2% to 25.24 mln t in Jan-July’13

In the 7-moth period, Klaipeda Port and Būtingės terminal (Lithuania) handled 25.24 mln t of cargo (+4.2%, year-on-year), the seaport authority says. The port’s results excluding Būtingės terminal has remained almost unchanged – 19.95 mln t.

Transshipment of crude oil climbed by 22.8% to 5.29 mln t, oil products – up 1.4% to 4.84 mln t, liquid fertilizers (including chemicals) – up 13.7% to 855,200 tonnes, agricultural goods – down 19% to 1.33 mln t, dry fertilizers – down 11% to 4.31, sugar – down 16.4% to 241,820 tonnes, construction materials – up 23.1% to 1.2 mln t, ore – down 24.6% to 406,560 t, scrap metal – down 9.2% to 183,640 t, timber cargo – down 11.5% to 296,290 t, iron and steel – down 39.8% to 122,820 t.

The port’s container throughput climbed by 5.6% to 229,440 t, Ro-Ro cargo – down 0.7% to 151,258 units. The number of calls declined by 2.2% to 3,846 calls. The port serviced 196,655 passengers (+1.2%).

Klaipeda State Seaport is the northernmost ice–free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is the most important and biggest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea, land and railway routes from East to West. The port’s throughput (including Butinge terminal) made 43.761 mln t in 2012.

The total throughput of Klaipėda Port and in Būtingės terminal in July of 2013 totalled 3,5 mln. tn, i.e. less by -9,5 pct. or by -375,3 thou. tn if to compare with the corresponding period of 2012.  The cargo handling turnover in Klaipėda Port in July of 2013 reached 2,6 mln. tn, i.e. less by  -12,1 pct.   or by  -369,2 thou. tn.  0,9 mln. tn, i.e. less by -0,7 pct. or by -6,1 thou. tn  of cargo were handled at  Būtingės terminal, said in the company's press release.

- Raw and processed minerals, construction materials  (249,8 thou. tn were handled, the change was +47,1 pct. or +79,9 thou. tn yoy);
- ore (bulk)  ( 110,9 thou. tn were handled,  the change was  +49,9 pct.  or +36,9 thou. tn yoy);
- oil products ( 663,3 thou. tn were handled,  the change was +3,8 pct. or +24,6 thou. tn yoy);
- natural and chemical fertilizers (bulk) ( 523,5 thou. tn were handled, the change was -39,8 pct. or -345,9 thou. tn yoy)were the categories of cargo that made the greatest impact on cargo handling turnover in July of the current year.
