Cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports grew by 6.3% in January-October

Throughout results in January-October 2012 the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 295 096,2 thou. tn, the year-on-year change is +6,3% or +17 585,9 thou. tn. Basic cargo categories that had made the biggest impact on this growth were as follows: crude oil (+10 648,1 thou. tn yoy), coal (+5 445,3 thou. tn yoy) and containerised cargoes (+2 019,0 thou. tn yoy), informs BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

Грузооборот в портах восточного побережья Балтийского моря за январь-октябрь вырос на 6,3%

Общий грузооборот в портах восточного побережья Балтийского моря за январь-октябрь 2012 года составил 295 096,2 тыс. т, изменение составило +6,3% или +17 585,9 тыс. т. Рост объемов грузооборота произошел за счет сырой нефти (+10 648,1 тыс. т), угля (+5 445,3 тыс. т) и грузов в контейнерах (+ 2 019,0 тыс. т), сообщают БК в пресс-служба Клайпедского порта.

Steveco закрывается в Хамине

Steveco Oy приняли решение прекратить стивидорные операции в порту Хамина. По информации компании, это произойдет до конца этого года.

Персонал в Хамине – а это 97 человек – будет сокращен.

В Steveco отмечают, что основные грузопотоки компании через Хамину в этом году значительно сократились, и несмотря на все попытки самой компании и порта Хамина Котка найти новые грузы, объемы будут падать и дальше.

Линии, работавшие через Хамину, сообщают о прекращении судозаходов.

MSC прекратили выдавать коносаменты на Котку со 2 ноября.

Unifeeder планирует последний судозаход в Хамину на 17 декабря, ожидается, что грузопотоки будут переориентированы на Котку.

Cargotec сокращает людей в Финляндии

Cargotec сокращает офисный и производственный персонал в Финляндии. Как сообщили SeaNews в компании, в сумме сокращается порядка 105 человеко-лет.

Под увольнение попадают 72 сотрудника, занятые в терминальном и сервисных подразделениях, global support, corporate и EMEA.

Еще 33 должности сократят за счет того, что не будут продлять временные контракты и не будут заполнять открытые вакансии.

Основные увольнения приходятся на подразделения в Тампере, где закрывается 65 контрактов, и в Хельсинки (31 контракт).

Всего у Cargotec в Финляндии работает около тысячи человек.

Сейчас компания ведет переговоры по возможным сокращениям в других странах.

ITF affiliates are responding to a call for solidarity with dockers in the Maldives, whose right to freedom of association is being repressed.

The dockers, represented by the ITF-affiliated Maldives Port Workers’ Union (MPWU), have reported anti-union activities by their employer Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), including the dismissal of several workers and union leaders.

The ITF is calling on the president of the Maldives to take action by instructing the management of the state-owned MPL to enter into good faith dialogue with the union so that their legitimate grievances can be addressed. The MPWU is concerned that assurances that the matter would be dealt with from the president, in response to a letter from ITF general secretary David Cockroft, have yet to be put into practice.

So far, unions in a range of countries, including Germany, Liberia, Mauritius and Mexico have sent out protest letters and messages of solidarity.

Stephen Cotton, ITF acting general secretary said: “The ITF will go ahead with its campaign to mobilise its affiliates worldwide to pressurise the Maldivian government so that its starts an immediate dialogue with the MPWU. This should be aimed at resolving the dispute by reinstating the dismissed union office bearers and activists, recognising the union and negotiating to establish decent wages and working conditions in the ports.”

A dockers’ union based in the US has been working with the ITF to assist the crew of a vessel that arrived in a US port last month.

The Liberian-flagged Sider Pink was seized by US marshalls in Sacramento in October as a result of a court order involving a financial dispute.

Members of the ITF-affiliated International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 18 sprang into action when they learned that the ship lacked sufficient food provisions and that the crew members were desperately hungry. They raised US$800 to purchase groceries, which they delivered to the crew.

The predominantly Chinese-speaking crew also reported that their pay had been withheld; they had resorted to eating seaweed to avoid starvation.

Meanwhile, when ITF west coast coordinator Jeff Engels, who had been liaising with relevant parties on behalf of the crew, arrived on the scene, he found that the coast guard agency had already noted the absence of sufficient provisions.

He concluded that the ship owner had violated the terms of the ITF collective bargaining agreement covering the vessel by failing to pay the crew properly; the company finally bowed to pressure and paid the outstanding back wages and agreed to cover the total costs of food provision.

Engels said that the owners were bound to be more careful before attempting to cheat the crew again “because ITF inspectors are stationed at ports around the world and we can track the Sider Pink as she travels the globe.”

He credited ILWU Local 18 members for their quick action and “front-line solidarity.”

Ray Familiathe, ILWU vice president, said: "The deplorable conditions on board the MV Sider Pink along with the seafarers’ cry for assistance allowed ILWU dockers to show their commitment to the ITF's flags of convenience campaign. Seafarers arriving in US west coast ports can be assured that dockworkers are ready to provide solidarity assistance when ship owners don't treat seafarers fairly."
