Freight carried by rail in Latvia decreased 9.7%, by road – increased by 27.4% in 9 months

In nine months of 2010 36.9 mln tons of freight were carried by rail, a decrease of 9.7% if compared to first three quarter of 2009, according to the data of Central Statistical Bureau. During nine months of 2010 freights carried by road formed 34.5 mln tons, and it is 27.4% more than in corresponding period of 2009.

National freights comprised 1 mln tons – 40.9thsd tons (4.3%) more than in January-September 2009. But international freights carried by rail constituted 35.9 mln tons – reduction of 4 mln tons (10%). 82.8% of the total international freight haulage was accounted for by transportation through Latvian ports.

During nine months of 2010 freights carried by road formed 34.5 mln tons, and it is 27.4% more than in corresponding period of 2009.

Most part (84.5% or 29.2 mln tons) of total volume of freights were national freights, they grew by 6.5 mln tons (28.6%). International freights rose by 21.3% – 5.3 mln tons of freights were transported.

In the first three quarters of 2010 32.9% (11.4 mln tons) of the total volume of freights carried by road were comprised by metal ores and other mining and quarrying products and peat, 25.7% (8.9 mln tons) – products of agriculture, hunting and forestry, fish and other fishing products, and 13.5% (4.7 mln tons) – by wood and products of wood and cork (except furniture), pulp, paper and paper products.

The freights transported by road are in transport on own account and in transport for hire or reward.22.1 mln tons of freights were transported by transport on hire, and it is 31.6% more than in January-September of previous year.In transport on own account – 12.4mln tons of freights – an increase of 20.5%.

In January-September 2010 4.3 mln tons of oil products were transported by the oil products pipeline, a growth of 39% on the corresponding period of previous year.

Compared to the first three quarters of 2009, in the nine months of 2010 passenger transportation in public transport continued to reduce.

In the nine months of 2010 16 mln passengers were carried by rail, a decrease of 4% if compared to January-September 2009. Number of passengers in national transports diminished by 4.3%, but in international transport (mainly between Latvia and Russia) the number grew by 14.6%.

In first three quarters of 2010 93.2 mln passengers were carried by regular bus traffic. And it is 15.4% less than in corresponding period of previous year. Most part (99.6%) of passengers were carried by national traffic. Their number decreased by 15.3%, but in international traffic – by 21.1%.
