ITF backs dockers in Morocco

21/12/2010

The ITF is calling for solidarity with the Union des Syndicats UMT des Transports, following the recent dismissals of union activists.

The ITF-affiliated dockers’ union is in dispute with APM Terminals Tangier. The union established the right to collectively bargain with the company in November. Since then, a member of the union board and three other activists have been sacked.

The dismissals are apparently connected to the union’s new-won rights. Management at the APM Terminal's Tangiers operations appear to be acting aggressively against the union.

“It is disappointing that the management of APM terminals is acting in this way,” said Frank Leys, dockers’ section secretary. “We hope that the local management will resolve the issue and get back on track to bargain fairly with the union.”

"We are not clear why APM treats its workers differently in some parts of the world,” said Bilal Malkawi, ITF Arab World regional secretary. “All dock workers in the region are monitoring what is happening in Tangiers, and will act accordingly. We hope that the management will reinstate the sacked workers immediately, and then sit round the table for negotiations."

The ITF has already written to the APM Terminals Tangier Managing Director, Etienne Rocher, strongly urging continued dialogue and the reinstatement of the sacked union activists without further delay. The company has yet to respond.

The ITF is asking its affiliates to support UMT, by sending letters of support.
