ITF backs Chittagong dockers

08/11/2010

ITF President Paddy Crumlin, in his role as Dockers' Section Chair, today publicly backed the workers at Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port in their ongoing struggle to defend their jobs.

Writing to the President of the local union the Dock Bandar Sramik Karmachari Federation, Paddy Crumlin stated that the ITF and its dockworker affiliates wished ‘to express their strong commitment of solidarity with you at this time as your Federation and the workers you represent struggle to achieve your legitimate trade union and human rights in extremely difficult circumstances’.

He stated that the ITF opposed the provocative actions of several private operators at the Port and cautiously welcomed reports that after thirteen months the CPA’s Chairman has started the issuing of the ID cards that are necessary to work dockside, and the apparent establishment of a committee to commence a process to reinstate the dockworkers.

Paddy Crumlin concluded: ‘Together as the ITF and in particular the international Dockers’ and Seafarers’ family, we stand with you in your great efforts to achieve your legitimate demands in the Port of Chittagong, and await your advice on how we may be of further assistance to resolve this matter in circumstances internationally acceptable and consistent with your requirements.’
