Rail Garant to start building works in Muuga in 2012
Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 30.12.2011.

Representatives of the Russian transport company Rail Garant claim that they will start building of a large container terminal in Muuga in 2012, writes Estonia news service BBN referring to Eesti Päevaleht daily.

Rail Garant that is Russia's fifth largest privately owned rail operator promised to invest 60 million euros in the terminal, the largest Russian private investment in Estonia since 2007, writes LETA.

Oleg Pershin, Board Member of Rail Garant Estonia, stated that the company has postponed construction plans because of shortage of special construction materials, namely heavy steel pillars that weight several tons and are used as support structures for container cranes: there will be 900 tons of steel pillars and they will be driven to the depth of 43 meters.

Rail Garant has claimed that it will load the first containers in the autumn 2012.

"I don't see any reason why it should not happen," Pershin pointed out.

As reported, Rail Garant at the beginning of April concluded one of the most important cooperation agreements of recent years with the Port of Tallinn.

According to the initial plans, the terminal with 130 million euros investment was supposed to start working in the first quarter of 2013 according to initial plans and by the end of the year the volume of containers was supposed to reach 51,000 TEU.
