All Baltic ports record smaller cargo turnover in January-September

All Baltic ports registered decreases in their cargo turnover amounts in the first nine months this year as compared with the same period last year, according to statistics compiled by the Nozare.lv business portal, informs LETA.


Klaipeda Port recorded the smallest reduction in cargo turnover of 3%, handling a total of 25.13 million tons of cargo. Riga Port's cargo turnover was 26.4 million tons – 3.6% fall from the first nine months of 2012, whereas Tallinn Port handled 21.34 million tons of cargo in the first nine months this year, a 5% fall.


Ventspils Port's cargo turnover totaled 22.55 million tons – 7.3% decrease on the first nine months of 2012, whereas Liepaja Port handled 3.45 million tons of cargo – 35.1% fall.


As reported, Latvian ports' combined cargo turnover reached 53.48 million tons in the first nine months of 2013, 7.9% less than in the same period in 2012.


In January-September 2012, Latvian ports handled 58.06 million tons of cargo.


Bulk cargo made up the largest part of cargo turnover at Latvian ports in the first nine months of 2013 – 25.75 million tons, followed by liquid cargo – 18.91 million tons, and general cargo – 8.81 million tons.


The steepest reduction was recorded for general cargo – 10.3%, followed by bulk cargo – 9%, and liquid cargo – 5.2%.


Compared to 2011, cargo turnover at Latvian ports rose 9.3% in 2012. Latvian ports handled 75.19 million tons of cargo in 2012, compared to 68.82 million tons in 2011.
